What is the Laksha plant?
The Laksha plant is really a misunderstanding. Many people search for it as if it were a herb, a tree or a flower, but Laksha is not a plant at all. It is lac: a natural resin secreted by a tiny insect that settles in colonies on the twigs of certain host trees. The confusion is easy to understand, because Laksha comes from trees and is gathered from them like a plant product, and because the classical texts list it alongside herbs and minerals. Yet the substance itself is of insect origin, not vegetable.
In Sanskrit the word Laksha means a hundred thousand, a nod to the countless insects that swarm on the branches to make it. The insect works over the bark, drawing sap from the host tree and giving off a hard, reddish resin that slowly builds into a thick crust. It is this crust, scraped from the twigs and purified, that Ayurveda has long valued. So the plainest way to answer the common question is this: there is no single Laksha plant. There is a lac insect, several host trees on which it lives, and the resin it leaves behind, which is what Ayurveda actually uses.
The lac insect and its host trees
The lac insect is Laccifer lacca, also written Kerria lacca, a minute scale insect of the family Kerriidae. The females settle in dense colonies on young branches, pierce the bark and feed on the sap. As they feed they secrete resin from their bodies, and because so many insects crowd together the resin merges into a continuous shell that coats the twig. The insects live and breed within this shell, and in time the encrusted branches are cut and the raw lac is collected.
The insect does not settle on just any tree. It favours particular hosts, and the classical and folk names of Laksha often point straight to them. Among the best known are Palasha (Butea monosperma), the flame-of-the-forest tree that the texts most closely associate with lac; Kusumbha; and ber, the jujube (Zizyphus). The quality of the resin was understood to vary with the host tree, and lac raised on Palasha was especially prized.
The same lac has a long life beyond Ayurveda. Refined, it becomes shellac, the resin used as a varnish and a natural coating; and the deep red colour held in the raw crust has served for centuries as a dye. So a single substance, the secretion of one small insect, gives Ayurveda its Laksha, the artisan a lacquer, and the dyer a warm crimson. How Ayurveda prepares it
