Shodhana Snehapana: Ghee-Drinking in Panchakarma
Shodhana Snehapana is the intensive ghee-drinking that prepares the body for Panchakarma: a graded course of medicated ghee, individualised, read by signs and physician-supervised.
Shodhana Snehapana is the intensive ghee-drinking that prepares the body for Panchakarma. It is a graded course of medicated ghee, taken by itself on an empty stomach and raised over successive days until the signs of proper oleation appear, so the body is saturated from within and the aggravated Dosha (functional bio-energy) and Ama (metabolic residue) are loosened before the main purifying action. It is individualised, read by signs and physician-supervised, and it is not a home practice.
What Shodhana Snehapana is
The term joins Shodhana, purification, with Snehapana, the drinking of fat, and it names the internal oleation given specifically to prepare for a purifying course, as distinct from a gentler oleation given only to nourish. This is the most intensive form of Snehana (oleation). Where external oiling softens the surface, this saturates the body from the inside: medicated ghee is taken so that its unctuous quality reaches deep into the tissues, softening what is dry and fixed and loosening the Doshas and the Ama from their seats. The tradition asks for this deep internal oleation before the strong actions because a body so prepared can be cleared safely and thoroughly, whereas an unprepared one cannot. It is, in short, the clinical opening move of a purifying course.
Why ghee, and why internally
The tradition reaches for ghee, ghrita, as the fat of internal oleation for particular reasons. It is held to carry the qualities of the herbs cooked into it deep into the tissues without disturbing the digestion when given correctly, and it is regarded as suiting the widest range of people. Taken internally and alone, on an empty stomach, its softening action is turned inward, toward the deep-seated Dosha and Ama that external oiling cannot reach. The ghee is medicated, prepared with herbs the physician selects for the case, so the vehicle and its qualities are matched to the person. All of this is a considered clinical choice, made by the practitioner, not a generic instruction to consume fat.
The rising course, read by signs
The classical way of giving internal oleation is a graded course rather than a single dose. The ghee is taken each morning on an empty stomach, and the amount is adjusted from day to day according to how the person responds, continuing until the signs of proper oleation appear. Crucially, the tradition fixes no universal quantity, because the right amount depends on the individual, above all on their koshtha, the nature of their digestive tract, which the physician assesses; a body that takes up fat readily needs less, a sluggish one more. For this reason no dose is stated here, and stating one would misrepresent how the procedure works. The measure is a clinical judgement read from the person, not a figure to be copied.
The classical writers also distinguish this deeper, preparatory oleation from the gentler internal oiling given only to nourish a dry or depleted person. The two use the same fats but differ in aim and in intensity: one saturates the body to ready it for a strong cleansing, the other simply restores what is lacking. It is the physician who decides which is called for, how far to carry it, and when the body has had enough, and this is another reason the ghee course cannot be read from a book and followed alone.
The strict regimen during the course
A course of internal oleation is bound by an exacting regimen, and the tradition counts these rules as part of what makes it safe. Through the days of the course the person sips warm water, rests and avoids exertion, keeps from daytime sleep, cold and wind, does not suppress the natural urges, and eats only light, warm, liquid food when hunger returns. These conditions support the digestion of the ghee and the deep loosening it is meant to achieve, and departing from them can turn a well-judged oleation into a burdensome one. The demands of this regimen, on diet, rest and conduct together, are one more reason the course belongs in a supervised setting rather than in ordinary daily life.
A clinical procedure, never a home practice
The conclusion is unambiguous. Shodhana Snehapana is a clinical procedure: its dosing is individualised, its regimen is strict, and it carries genuine contraindications, being avoided or modified where digestion is weak, where Ama is high, and in various states the physician must weigh. It is undertaken only under a qualified Ayurvedic physician, as the opening of a supervised Panchakarma, and for anyone with a health condition, in consultation with their own doctor. The gentle culinary use of a little ghee with food is ordinary nourishment and belongs to daily life; the drinking of medicated ghee as an intensive preparatory course does not. The signs, the doses and the conduct are all the practitioner’s to judge, and the safest reading of this article is that it explains how the tradition describes the procedure, not how to perform it.
To read further, see internal Snehana oleation more broadly, Panchakarma as a whole, Agni, the digestive fire the regimen protects, and Ama, the metabolic toxins that the ghee course loosens.
This article describes the classical Ayurvedic understanding of Shodhana Snehapana and is offered for education, not as medical advice. This intensive ghee-drinking is a clinical procedure undertaken only under a qualified Ayurvedic physician, and is not to be attempted at home.
Frequently asked questions
What is Shodhana Snehapana?
Shodhana Snehapana is the intensive internal oleation that prepares the body for purification: the drinking of medicated ghee in a graded course, taken on an empty stomach and raised over successive days until the signs of proper oleation appear. Its purpose is to saturate the body from within so the aggravated Doshas and Ama are loosened before the main Panchakarma action. It is a clinical procedure, physician-supervised. This is education, not medical advice.
How is Shodhana Snehapana different from taking ghee with food?
A little ghee with food is ordinary nourishment. Shodhana Snehapana is a therapeutic course of medicated ghee taken by itself on an empty stomach, in rising amounts judged by the person's response, under a strict regimen, specifically to prepare for a purifying action. The two are quite different in intent, amount and conduct, and only the gentle culinary use belongs in daily life.
How much ghee is taken in Snehapana?
The tradition gives no fixed amount, because the quantity is individualised and adjusted day by day according to the person's digestion and the signs of oleation. This is exactly why it must be judged by a trained physician rather than followed from a recipe, and why no dose is given here. The measure is a clinical judgement, not a number to copy at home.
Can I do Shodhana Snehapana at home?
No. This intensive ghee-drinking course has individualised dosing, a demanding daily regimen, and real contraindications, and it is avoided or modified where digestion is weak or Ama is high. It is undertaken only under a qualified Ayurvedic physician as the opening of a supervised Panchakarma. It is not a self-administered practice, and attempting it alone removes the safeguards that make it safe.
How does the physician know the ghee course is complete?
By the signs of proper oleation, Samyak Snigdha: easy passage of wind and stool, a softness and faint oily sheen to the skin, a feeling of lightness, and a natural distaste for further ghee. The physician reads these to judge that the body is oleated enough to move on, while watching for signs of too little or too much. Reading these signs is a trained skill.
